Climbing at Frogatt and Curbar
Some of the best gritstone climbing in England can be found
on the escarpment known as Frogatt. This lies on the Eastern edge of the Derwent
Valley.OS Ref 250765. The climbs vary from the classic VS routes such as Valkyrie
to the desperates slabs like Hareless Heart (E5 ). You can tackle thin slabs
such as Brown's eliminate (E2) or have a tussle with a steep hand jam crack such
as Two Pitch Route (HVS). A good selection of wires and friends are useful, select
what you need for each route. It becomes very busy at the weekends, with hundreds
of climbers merging with the families out for a walk, wilderness it is not! An
early start is recommended. The whole cliff faces SW so evening climbing, and
winter climbing is good. Part of the attraction to the area is a visit to one
of the local climbing cafes. Longlands at Hathersage or the legendary Grindleford
Cafe, basic and cheap in the old railway station. Many guidebooks are now available,
and also guides to the many "problems" scattered around on the boulders.
